Georgia Ancient Philosophy Seminar

GAPS 2017: Plato's Charmides

September 30, 2017

Carrollton, Georgia

▷ READING:

Participants must read the Charmides closely in advance. An English translation of Plato’s Charmides with Stephanus pagination is greatly preferred. Some of us will be using the stand alone Hackett editions (e.g. here or here). Knowledge of Greek is not necessary to participate, but here is an English-Greek parallel. A brief introduction is offered by Peter Adamson’s podcast, and don’t miss the Charmides bibliography, edited by John Bova (who sent us these last links).

▷ DISCUSSION:

Participants are all welcome to speak, but should not feel specifically obligated to do so. The core goal of our discussion is to practice sōphrosynē (σωφροσύνη; perhaps: temperance, measuredness, sound-mindedness, etc.). With this aim in mind, we strongly suggest reviewing the GAPS Conversation Guidelines.
